Patient Engagement
for Medical Professionals

In an attempt to stem the tide of chronic disease, patient engagement and health behavior change are now  important issues for medical providers. Current healthcare reform mandates focus on patient health education, disease prevention and patient health advocacy as part of the Pay for Performance and Meaningful Use guidelines that medical professionals are tasked with providing for their patients.

Since 1980, the National Institute of Whole Health (NIWH) has been researching and developing, at Boston area hospitals and medical centers, a model of communication skills and patient education for clinicians that leads to enhanced patient engagement, patient empowerment and decision making and sustainable health behavior change.

The Whole Health Education model, which includes Behavioral Engagement with Pure Presence, is a nationally recognized Best Practice, named by a Harvard Affiliate hospital as a Best Practice in Relationship-Centered Care and nominated the model for a prestigious Fetzer Institute Award.

In addition to its previous 35 years of research, the model is currently the subject of two (2) studies out of Central Michigan University and is IRB approved for a 2015 registered Clinical Trial Study at Michigan State University, Institute of Health Policy and Innovation, under the direction of Saleh Aldasouqi, MD. NIWH has signed a collaborative research agreement with Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine.

NIWH now offers a 20-contact hour, continuing education on-line workshop, Behavioral Engagement that is both cost and time effective for busy physicians and medical providers. The workshop offers five (5) audio presentations, PDF files of handouts and research abstracts and Power Point Slides that accompany each audio.

The individual audio presentations are approximately 32 minutes long. In addition, there are three (3) streamed video courses offering a total of 3.5 hours of content, collectively. The video courses, presented and filmed in Boston at the Tufts School of Medicine, New England Medical Center, are:

The workshops provides 20 Category I CME contact hours for physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners through the American Academy of Family Physicians, as well as 20 CE contact hours for other medical providers and allied specialists. See our Accreditation page for details.
